LANZAROTE, A SUSTAINABLE DESTINATION
The particular model of development that the island has undergone, with sustained economic growth, and with clear protection and conservation of nature and the environment, has served to ensure the award of several recognitions for its sustainability. For example, on 7th October 1993, it was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, and in 2015, it became the first destination to receive Biosphere Responsible Tourism certification.
This latter was the definitive acknowledgment of the islanders’ long, hard work to maintain one of their most defining and identifying traits: their continued interest in respecting and preserving the environment.
