Towards the middle of the 15th century, the Castle of Santa Bárbara was built on the peak of the Guanapay Volcano (Teguise) in order to protect Lanzarote from the pirate invasions that the island suffered. Today the fortress is used as an exhibition space, a museum that tells the history of piracy itself.
