On 2nd July 1888, 109 Fuencarral street in Madrid, there was a strong burning smell that woke neighbours up.
When the police got to the scene, they saw Luciana Borcino’s body, Vázquez Varela’s widow, lying on the ground, with multiple stab wounds and covered in burning cloth. In the room next door they found Higinia Balaguer, her maid, and their dog Podenco.
